Inauguration of the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union

On 30 January 2019 (Riga) and 31 January  2019 (Vilnius), the Embassy of Romania inaugurated the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union by organizing two concerts of the ensemble Balanescu Quartet.

Ministers and members of the two parliaments, other senior Lithuanian and Latvian officials, academics, representatives of the diplomatic corps, local authorities, representatives of the business community, the Romanian community, journalists, etc. attended the two events.

In the opening of the events in the two Baltic capitals, the Ambassador of Romania spoke about the debut of the Romanian Presidency of the Council in the context of challenges such as Brexit, the European Parliament elections or the debates on the future EU budget. He also mentioned the PRES RO priorities, which are focusing on the four main pillars of action: Europe of convergence, A Safer Europe, Europe  – a stronger global actor and Europe of common values, expressing the belief that both Lithuania and Latvia will support their completion, being of mutual interest. He then made a short presentation of the musical ensemble, talking about the influences of the Romanian folklore on their repertoire and about the personality of the leader and composer Alexander Bălănescu.

The concerts, which included well-known musical pieces inspired by personalities such as George Enescu and Maria Tanase, enjoyed the appreciation of the audience in the two capitals.

Balanescu Quartet was founded in 1987 by the composer and violinist Alexander Bălănescu, born in Romania. He left for to Israel in 1969, then continued studying the violin in London, and graduated from the Julliard School in New York. The Balanescu Quartet repertoire includes his leader‘s own compositions, as well as adaptations from Romanian folklore or from George Enescu's music.

The events were followed by a reception where Romanian wine was served.
